Beyond Fear and Shame

Join Sarah Parker for this important training exploring the often unseen needs of neurodivergent individuals experiencing eating disorders.

An accredited counsellor, coach, and passionate educator, Sarah brings extensive experience across relational counselling, ACT, Compassion Focused Therapy, and EMDR. Drawing on both professional expertise and lived experience, she offers a thoughtful perspective on how eating disorders can present within neurodivergent individuals and how support can be offered more effectively.

This session invites participants to step inside the inner world of neurodivergent clients, encouraging more collaborative, open, and compassionate dialogue. Sarah will share insights from her own experiences within treatment services, what she wishes professionals had understood, and the lessons she has learned working with clients — particularly those who have experienced trauma within traditional treatment settings.

What You'll Learn

Participants will explore the concept of shame — its definition, psychological impact, and the ways it can manifest emotionally and behaviourally within clients experiencing eating disorders. Sarah will examine compassion as a powerful antidote to shame, highlighting the importance of empathic listening, creating safe and non-judgemental therapeutic spaces, and adopting a collaborative, empowering approach in clinical work.

Drawing on both clinical and lived experience, Sarah introduces a series of animal metaphors to help therapists reflect on their role in the therapeutic relationship. Through examples such as the Terrier, Ostrich, Kangaroo, Rhino, Dolphin, and St Bernard, participants will explore different therapeutic styles and how these can influence the client’s experience of care.

The workshop guides participants through the emotional journey many clients face — from the first appointment through to recovery. Along the way, key aspects of treatment are examined, including the atmosphere of the therapy space, language and body language used, expectations placed on clients, diagnostic labels, and the communication styles of health professionals. Sarah also explores the subtle dynamics of treatment, such as understanding a client’s relationship with their plate, recognising the person beyond the illness, navigating treatment compliance, and the potential impact of group settings.

Further discussion considers treatment modality and choice, the importance of control for many clients, the focus placed on weight, and the complex reasons some individuals may feel safer remaining unwell. The training also reflects on themes such as punishment versus forgiveness, fears of losing care or love, and the emotional complexity of change.

As the workshop moves towards the concept of recovery, participants will explore what recovery may truly mean for clients. Topics include the role of weighing scales, nurturing the emerging sense of self, the challenges of leaving treatment environments, managing fears of abandonment, and the risk of relapse as support begins to reduce. The session also explores how to navigate endings safely and maintain realism and compassion throughout the therapeutic process.

This workshop provides a valuable and reflective learning experience for mental health professionals, counsellors, and educators, supporting deeper understanding and more compassionate practice when working with neurodivergent clients experiencing eating disorders.
