Jess Baumber
Chartered Counselling Psychologist
I qualified as a Counselling Psychologist in 2010. During and since my training I have been keen to develop as much knowledge and experience of working with disordered eating difficulties as possible. I focussed on eating and body image distress for my MSc research project, I have undertaken several post-qualification courses relating to disordered eating, and I have gained much experience working with these issues both in private practice and within an NHS-funded charity setting.
I have also long been passionate about meeting the needs of neurodivergent clients, and have been educating myself about neurodivergence for several years through reading and attending courses. It has seemed so important to bring together awareness of eating distress alongside neurodivergence – having noticed the understandable combination of these experiences over and over again in my work.
I know that disordered eating doesn’t “look” like any one thing and I love helping people develop happier relationships with food, eating, their bodies and themselves regardless of their specific concerns. I work across the size/weight spectrum, and although I have experience of working with many types of eating and body-image issues, I have particular experience working with clients who consider themselves to be “over-eaters” or “binge-eaters” with higher-weight bodies.
I consider myself to be open to, and valuing of, all forms of difference, and I aim to be aware of the intersection of different identities. I strongly believe in an approach that puts the person first, and that takes into account their unique experience, rather than focussing purely on disordered eating behaviours in a one-size-fits-all way. I have access to multi-disciplinary working opportunities and, where appropriate, can refer within my professional network.
